Chicago Bears RB Kyle Monangai could be out weeks according to head coach Ben Johnson
The Chicago Bears were one of the most improved teams in the NFL in 2025 under head coach Ben Johnson. They finished last season 11-6 and won the NFC North. This year, they want to be even better.
One of the most pleasant surprises, specifically on offense, last season was running back Kyle Monangai. The 2025 seventh round pick emerged as Chicago’s backup running back, and racked up 169 carries for 783 yards and five touchdowns.
As is the case for just about everyone, the expectation is that Monangai will be even better in 2026. However, whether or not he will be available for Week One remains to be seen.
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson says Kyle Monangai is week to week

Earlier in training camp, Coach Johnson said that practices this offseason were going to be more physical than they were last year. Perhaps coincidentally (and perhaps not), multiple Bears players have suffered some pretty significant injuries already.
On Sunday, Monangai went down with what looked like a pretty severe knee injury. Imaging, though, showed that it was “just” a hyperextended knee. Fortunately, he did not suffer any ligament damage.
But the Bears’ primary backup running back could be out for a while:

As can be seen in the post above, Monangai is believed to be week-to-week with his knee injury. Obviously, there has been no determination as to if he will need to go on the PUP list at this point in time.
That being said, the regular season is just a few short weeks away. It is entirely possible that he will be ready to go by then, but it is equally possible that he will not.
