Chicago Bears not sure CB will make team despite 2 INT performance
The Chicago Bears went into the 2026 NFL off-season knowing that their secondary was going to need an overhaul. Their entire starting safety room left in free agency, as did some of their cornerbacks. What is more, their most high-profile free agent signing, Coby Bryant, is going to be out for the next 4-6 months as he recovers from a serious knee injury in practice.
All this to say that a Bears defense that led the NFL in turnovers forced last season is going to be hard-pressed to do so again. Despite this, one player that had himself an impressive day on Saturday still may not make the roster.
Beanie Bishop Jr. may not make the Chicago Bears roster

About a week ago, with their secondary banged up, Chicago signed free agent cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. Of course, he suited up for the Bears preseason game on Saturday, and had himself a great afternoon. Bishop recorded two interceptions in Chicago’s 34-10 victory.
Such a performance, one would think, would give Bishop an inside track to a roster spot. However, head coach Ben Johnson said that was not the case.
“I think it’s a credit to him. He doesn’t say a whole lot. He’s just learning and trying to absorb the system right now. I think (Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen) DA has been pretty clear with how our pass defense works together. It’s the rush upfront, combined with the coverage in the back end. And when you feel that front coming off the ball and affecting the quarterback to the degree that they did, move him off his spot, that’s where you get some overthrows and things of that nature.
“And Beanie’s in great position and he took advantage of it twice, you know? Thought he had a great return afterwards as well. It was awesome to see. We’ll continue to evaluate him as we get going. Also, where we have to get better as a team is, we have to score some touchdowns when we get those takeaways. There’s a lot of good tape from today. I know what the score says, and yet we have a lot to learn from and grow from as well.”
As one can see, Johnson said they would “continue to evaluate” Bishop. They are not going to let one stellar performance in pre-season make their decision for them. Which is smart.
However, it will be interesting to see how well this year’s Bears defense can generate turnovers compared to last season.
