Fever announce unfortunate news after Caitlin Clark’s big week

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark

It wasn’t all good news for the Indiana Fever on Monday.

Caitlin Clark was named the WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week after another awe-inspiring stretch. Indiana played three games between Jul. 27 and Aug. 2. The four-time All-Star led her team to a 2-1 record, averaging 25.7 points on 53.7% shooting, 5.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists.

This marked Clark’s second consecutive Player of the Week honor as she has kept her foot on the gas over one of the most impressive stretches of her three-year WNBA career.

Indiana Fever announce season-ending news

The Fever announced some unfortunate news just a few hours before they revealed Clark’s latest. This came in the form of backup center Damiris Dantas undergoing season-ending surgery. The 6-foot-4 frontcourt player has not played in Indiana’s last five games. It has now been confirmed that she is done for the year.

“Damiris Dantas underwent successful knee surgery on Monday to repair a torn meniscus in her left knee and will miss the remainder of the 2026 WNBA season,” the Fever announced via an Instagram post.

The silver lining here is that Dantas’ surgery was successful. However, there’s no denying that losing one of their rotation players at this point in the season is an unfortunate blow for the Fever and their title hopes.

Dantas made 12 appearances this year, averaging 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds in 8.2 minutes per game.

Aliyah Boston, Monique Billings, Myisha Hines-Allen and Mikayla Timpson will carry most of the frontcourt load for the Fever now that they’ve lost Dantas. The team also signed 6-foot-3 forward Ugonne Onyiah to a developmental contract on Friday, and she, too, can be thrown into the mix amid Indiana’s latest injury situation.
