Former WNBA star tells the ‘scary’ truth behind Fever HC Stephanie White’s wrath
Stephanie White garnered a lot of attention with her pregame statement on Tuesday. The Indiana Fever head coach fired back at critics for saying that she does not support her players, particularly Sophie Cunningham. Many people reacted to her comments, including former WNBA star Chiney Ogwumike.
White and the Fever faced the Chicago Sky on Saturday. The game became heated late in the first quarter after officials assessed DiJonai Carrington with a Flagrant 2 foul for hitting Cunningham’s head during a fast break. Several fans called for the league to suspend her, but the league decided otherwise. She returned to action on Monday and recorded a career-high 26 points during Chicago’s 97-88 loss to the Seattle Storm.
Indiana defeated the Sky 90-86. The two teams will meet again on Aug. 23 at WinTrust Arena in what is expected to be another tightly-contested matchup.

Chiney Ogwumike shares her take on Fever HC Stephanie White’s statement
Ogwumike shared her thoughts about White’s comments. She emphasized that being vulnerable is “one of the scariest things in life.”
“To me, I see someone under immense pressure,” Ogwumike said. “And I think one of the scariest things in life to be is (be) vulnerable when all the eyes are on you and you continue to speak your truth. And I think that was a woman, someone that loves basketball, everyone knows what she means, not only to the basketball world, but also in Indiana… I think that’s the hard place about where the W is right now, is that when a basketball analysis is led to someone’s character being judged or someone’s job being called for.
“Because in reality, all of this emotion is coming from Steph White and what she said postgame about DiJonai, which she said it was a Flagrant 2 foul. But she didn’t think DiJonai was purposely going for her neck, and that DiJonai is a player that plays hard. That’s essentially what Steph White said.”

Ogwumike was the No. 1 overall pick in 2014. She last played in the league in 2023 with the Los Angeles Sparks. The Stanford product won two All-Star nods and received the Rookie of the Year award.
Indiana won its second consecutive game on Tuesday, as they beat the New York Liberty 106-92. The Fever now hold a 21-12 record for the season and continue to climb up the standings. They will embark on a four-game road trip starting on Thursday against the Atlanta Dream.
