WNBA facing backlash over DiJonai Carrington decision
WNBA headlines continue to be dominated by DiJonai Carrington’s Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham on Saturday. Fans have been talking about it and some have called for the Chicago Sky guard to receive a ban for the remainder of the season. However, the league decided otherwise.
The referees ejected Carrington early in the first quarter after she hit the Indiana Fever star on the head. Things got heated quickly as Cunningham stood up and tried to go after Carrington. Their teammates, along with the referees, separated them to avoid any unnecessary actions.
The Fever won 90-86 and snapped their two-game losing skid. Carrington finished with eight points, while Cunningham was limited to three points and one rebound. Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark once again shone for the home team, combining for 53 points and 13 assists. Chicago, on the other hand, was led by Natasha Cloud and Rachel Banham’s 17 points each.
Fans criticize the WNBA for not suspending DiJonai Carrington
Carrington returned to action on Monday when the Sky faced the Seattle Storm. She avoided a suspension and produced 26 points, six rebounds and five steals. However, she and her team failed to secure a win, losing 97-88. Fans on X criticized the league for its decision.
Two days after DiJonai Carrington was ejected for blasting Sophie Cunningham in the face and then posting “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on social media, she checks into the Sky’s next game.

“The WNBA is a dumpster fire. Keep your distance.,” a user wrote.
“It’s a privilege to play without discipline from the WNBA,” one comment read.
“Unbelievable… this is truly one of the most absurd things I have seen in sports that should have triggered a significant suspension but didn’t,” a fan said.
“Just make her a joke. The entire #wnba is a subsidized joke,” posted another.
“Stop giving them ratings. This crap is never on my TV,” another fan commented.
“There’s no accountability or consequences. Increase the fines by a lot and expelled them from the league. This will all stop,” a reaction read.
Many expected the WNBA to impose a harsher punishment but that was not the case. Carrington and Chicago will play their next game on Wednesday against the Golden State Valkyries. They must secure a win as they are now on a two-game losing skid and their chances of qualifying for the playoffs are slowly diminishing.
