JetNation NFL Power Rankings Week 3
The Week 3 NFL Power Rankings are here, with injuries already testing contenders and the Jets looking to rebound after a frustrating loss to Green Bay. Who has the depth to weather a seventeen-game season?
1. Seattle Seahawks 2-0 (Week Two: 1)
The Seahawks put the Cardinals away with a dominant second half. Drew Lock was solid for the Seahawks who appear to be good enough to weather Sam Darnold’s injury.
2. San Francisco 49ers 2-0 (Week Two: 2)
The Niners were expected to be good but not this good. So far, San Francisco is winning by an average score of 31-10
3. Los Angeles Rams 1-1 (Week Two: 4)
We got a fully rested Rams team on Monday night, as opposed to the opening night disaster. By the end of the year, we may find that only jet lag can beat this team.
4. Buffalo Bills 2-0 (Week Two: 5)
The Bills have two wins against teams that were expected to be serious contenders for conference titles.
5. Kansas City Chiefs 2-0 (Week Two: 6)
It was not nearly as impressive as their Week One win, but the Chiefs got it done on Sunday night. Next up for Kansas City are two very winnable road games against the Raiders and Dolphins.
6. Jacksonville Jaguars 1-1 (Week Two: 3)
The Jaguars were in position to score an impressive road win on Sunday, but they let it slip away. The next three weeks will tell us a lot about Jacksonville with home games against the Patriots and Eagles sandwiching a road trip to Cincinnati.
7. New England Patriots 1-1 (Week Two: 7)
New England throttled the Steelers in Pittsburgh. The defense is stout, but there is concern over Drake May’s play through the first two weeks of the season.
8. Philadelphia Eagles 2-0 (Week Two: 8)
The Eagles got a clutch drive to win late against the Titans on Sunday. This team desperately needs to figure out how to run the ball better. The schedule gets much more difficult from here.
9. Cincinnati Bengals 2-0 (Week Two: Unranked)
The Bengals defense has been a major story through the first two weeks of the season. The Cincinnati defense is in the top ten in rushing yards allowed and points against.
10. Minnesota Vikings 2-0 (Week Two: Unranked)
The Vikings have essentially won two games with their backup quarterback. The question is whether there will be any improvement from the offense when the starter gets back under center.
20. New York Jets 1-1 (Week Two: 23)
Oh, what could have been? This week would certainly have a vastly different feel if the Jets were 2-0. The Jets have not been 2-0 since 2015. That streak was all but ended as New York led Green Bay 17-7 with just over 11 minutes remaining in Sunday’s game.
However, the Jets could not close it out as they had failures in all three phases down the stretch. The offense failed to sustain a drive or protect the lead, including a fourth-and-1 at midfield the team could not convert late in regulation. The defense, which had held Jordan Love and the Packers in check for three quarters, surrendered a 73-yard touchdown drive after a costly pass-interference penalty. The Jets special teams then allowed a 63-yard punt return that set up the tying field goal. Overtime offered no recovery: Geno Smith was sacked on consecutive plays, the Jets went three-and-out, and Green Bay quickly moved into range for the winning kick with little resistance from the Jets defense.
The Jets travel to Ford Field to face the 1-1 Detroit Lions this week. The Lions have not played up to expectations, but they are certainly talented enough to beat the Jets if New York does not play its best for all four quarters. The Lions have a potent combination on offense with a top-five running back in Jahmyr Gibbs and a top five receiver in Amon-Ra St. Brown. Detroit has scored 31 points in each of its first two games. On the bright side, the Lions have also allowed 35.5 points per game, so there are holes to be exploited by the Jets offense.
Despite the weaknesses displayed by the Lions defense thus far, it would be a major mistake to try to outscore the Lions. Detroit’s defense has started the season in the bottom five against the run. There is the Jets path to victory on Sunday. This week Gang Green needs to feature a major dose of Breece Hall behind an offensive line that played solidly for three quarters last week and horribly for the final quarter.
Apart from a few spots, the Jets are a very young team. Closing a game out is a lesson young players need to master. Last week was lesson one for the majority of the Jets roster. Let’s hope the Jets young core are fast learners.
