Bears’ Ben Johnson drops eye-opening Coby Bryant injury update
The Chicago Bears made a massive splash in free agency when they signed safety Coby Bryant to a three-year, $40 million contract. But due to an offseason knee injury, the Bears have yet to see Bryant officially suit up.
After undergoing surgery, the safety was put on a four-to-six month recovery timeline. On the short side, that would have Bryant back in December while a full six-month recovery would keep him out until February. Chicago is hoping to have him back by the end of the regular season, but they won’t risk a setback for their prized free agent.
In his absence, the Bears have moved on from Xavier Woods and turned to Cam Lewis. When Bryant does make his return, Lewis is expected to revert into a Swiss army knife type role, playing all over the secondary. Of course, that can’t happen until Chicago has their starting safety tandem back in place.
When that will happen is still up in the air. Head coach Ben Johnson did at least clarify what Bryant’s rehab process will look like.
Chicago Bears staying patient on Coby Bryant

The head coach didn’t stray away from the initial four-to-six month timeline. But he didn’t confirm that Bryant is taking steps towards his return. How much the safety is able to do in the month of November will play a pivotal role in his activation decision, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
“Johnson said Bryant is “on track” with his rehab and that he’ll start running on land in the “near future,” but the safety is a ways away from being able to do change of direction movement, which will be the stress test to see how his knee responds when he pushes down on it and changes direction at a high velocity,” Cronin wrote.
“Johnson said the team is going to keep the timeline “vague” for now (anywhere from a December to February return),” she continued. “But the next month is critical to see if the Bears can get him back this season.
The Bears have high hopes for Bryant. And his return could be the spark Chicago’s defense needs to find its consistency.
But the franchise wants the safety to fully heal first. Once he is further along in the rehab process, the Bears will have a better idea if a regular season return is realistic.
