Chicago Bears have secret weapon amid sudden tight end problems
The Chicago Bears were hoping to have a three-headed monster at tight end throughout the entire 2026 season. But Cole Kmet’s season-ending injury has now thrown a wrench into those plans.
Colston Loveland will certainly step into a larger role. He has been heating up over the last two weeks with Caleb Williams back under center. With 13 receptions for 134 yards and two touchdowns in that span, the Bears will continue looking the tight end’s way.
Rookie Sam Roush will now be expected to take on more responsibilities. The third-rounder has had some rough moments as he gets acclimated to the league. But head coach Ben Johnson remains confident in his ability.
Still, if Chicago is going to have a three-headed monster, they’d need at least one more tight end. One currently on the Bears practice squad may now earn an unexpected opportunity.
Chicago Bears could turn to Stephen Carlson
Stephen Carlson hasn’t caught a pass in the NFL since 2020. However, he has been on the Bears practice squad. He knows exactly what Johnson is looking for on offense. Which could lead to a main roster call up, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.
“I’d expect veteran Stephen Carlson, who has been on the team’s practice squad since 2023, to have a role,” Biggs wrote. “Carlson has appeared in only three regular-season games in that span, but the Bears have kept him around for a reason. They believe he can help when a need arises. He also has a long history with tight ends coach Jim Dray. Carlson, 29, broke into the NFL in 2019 with the Cleveland Browns when Dray was an assistant there.”
Carlson will first need to be added to the active roster to make an impact. Once there, it’s fair to wonder how large his role will really be. But despite any additions made to the tight end room in Chicago since 2023, Carlson has found a way to remain.
That patience, on both sides, could now pay off with the Bears in need of a tight end.
