Angel Reese admits frustration toward referees after Dream loss

Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese (5) reacts in the fourth quarter against the Phoenix Mercury

Things have not gone according to plan in Games 4 and 5 of the WNBA Finals for Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream. They held a 2-1 series lead but lost the last two matchups and now have their backs against the wall. The star forward admitted that she felt frustrated with the referees during Monday’s 64-55 defeat.

Reese finished Game 5 with seven points on 2-of-8 shooting, along with 15 rebounds and five assists. It was her second straight game not scoring in double digits following her eight-point, nine-rebound performance in Game 4.

The Dream and Golden State Valkyries have adjusted on both ends of the floor and have made it tougher to score. However, Reese has also been less aggressiveness in the last two games, which she discussed last Wednesday. Her production will be key in Atlanta pushing the series to a winner-take-all Game 7 and keeping the team’s championship hopes alive.

Angel Reese speaks on officiating following Dream’s Game 5 defeat

Reese addressed the media and expressed frustration with the officiating in Game 5. She cited an instance where she was fouled on purpose by Valkyries players and told the referees about it. However, they didn’t blow their whistle.

“I would definitely say last game, for sure, there was also a possession where Gabby (Williams) pulled me on purpose and she was screaming, ‘Foul foul, foul’ and they didn’t call it,” Reese said. “So that definitely was frustrating for sure. And her team is saying it and they’re all screaming foul. But the refs, I don’t know what’s going on why they can’t hear it. I know I have the mismatch, especially were talking about matchups.

“So when I do switch on the post and I’m a lot stronger than the opponent, I should be able to turn and they’re calling offensive foul. But I’m getting pushed before that. That is frustrating for sure. It definitely shifted when we went up 2-1 and things shifted and I don’t know what happened, but it definitely took a big turn.”

The Dream will host Game 6 on Thursday at State Farm Arena. The venue will likely be sold out again as the home fans will cheer and rally behind their team. PEAC will broadcast the game live starting at 12:30 p.m. ET.
