Bears’ Ben Johnson not pressing panic button over Kyle Monangai injury

Bears Ben Johnson

Running back Kyle Monangai played a pivotal role in the Chicago Bears’ 23-12 victory over the New York Jets in Week 4. However, an unfortunate thumb injury casted a dark cloud over his breakout game.

Still, head coach Ben Johnson isn’t panicking just yet. He labeled Monangai day-to-day and overall expressed optimism surrounding the running back’s injury, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.

“Ben Johnson thinks Kyle Monangai is ‘going to be OK,’” Cronin wrote. “Called Monangai’s thumb injury a ‘day to day deal.’”

The Bears will have a better understanding of where Monangai stands after he undergoes more tests. But Johnson has famously used the term week-to-week when describing more long-term injuries. Between the head coach’s optimism and the fact Monangai was made available to the media after Week 4, Chicago at least has some confidence they dodged a bullet.

Still, the running back’s status on the Week 5 injury report will be watched like a hawk. Especially after how the Bears utilized him in Week 4.

Chicago Bears can’t afford long-term Kyle Monangai injury

Against the Jets, Monangai earned a career-high 30 yards, gaining 146 yards and two touchdowns. Averaging 4.9 yards per carry, the running back was explosive and helped Chicago set a new franchise record with 34 first downs. Monangai’s ability to gain chunk yardage allowed the Bears to hold the ball for 42:45.

One area Chicago clearly struggled in was the red zone. Twice they were stuffed at the Jets’ one-yard line. And while Monangai was the victim of one of those stoppages. Both of his rushing touchdowns came from within the five-yard line. He scored on fourth-and-one in the first quarter. Perhaps Johnson decides to use the running back more often in goal-to-go situations.

But first, Monangai needs to get back on the gridiron. Johnson will remain optimistic about having the running back’s services in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers.
