Chicago Bears: 60% of OL miss practice amid fatigue concern

Chicago Bears Ben Johnson

Nobody needs to remind the Chicago Bears who they’re playing this week, but the offense might need some extra time to find the energy to play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday after an exhausting effort against the New York Jets in Week 4.

The Bears offense ran 89 plays in a 23-12 win over the Jets. Chicago had more first downs (34) than the Jets had plays (32) as Ben Johnson’s offense had a possession time of 42:45. New York had the ball for just 45 seconds in the fourth quarter.

The injury report on Wednesday showed the ramifications of the effort.

Per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, 60% of the offensive line did not practice, Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson, and Darnell Wright battling injuries.

“60% of the Bears O-line did not practice LG Joe Thuney (pec) RG Jonah Jackson (ankle) RT Darnell Wright (ankle) 67% of backfield did not practice,” Biggs posted on X. “RB D’Andre Swift (hip/knee) RB Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) Could be after effects of 89 snaps. Thursday report will tell more.”

The Bears could be given their offensive line a break on Wednesday after running nearly 90 plays on Sunday. Chicago needs its offensive line to be in its best shape when playing the Packers on Sunday. With fresh legs, the Bears will be more effective.

Johnson told reporters before Wednesday’s practice that the players would wear pads. He wanted the offensive line to improve their techniques and fundamentals, but also wanted to make sure he didn’t overwork the offense after running 89 plays against the Jets.

“We had a long discussion there with our guys and we’re trying to do the best we can to balance it out,” Johnson said, via RoundtableSports. “Like I said before, we are still in improvement mode. We’re just starting the second quarter of the season. It’s all about how do we improve as a team.”

“It’s not like we can go full-fledged walkthrough. We don’t believe in that. And yet, it’ll be a little bit different practice here today to make sure that we’re smart about the number of reps that we got on Sunday.”

The Bears still have two more practices to get their reps in before playing the Packers. Those practices should be more productive after extra rest was given to the offense.
