Chicago Bears running back room takes hit as two miss Wednesday’s practice

Chicago Bears

In just a few days, the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers will write another chapter in their historic rivalry.

There’s certainly no love lost between the two, and that’ll be on full display this Sunday when the Bears take the field in Green Bay. It’s the first matchup between the two since last year’s thrilling Wild Card game, where the Bears excitingly defeated their rival at Soldier Field.

Chicago will look to win their third straight and move to 4-1 on the season. Hopefully, they won’t be without too many players, but the injury bug has been prevalent (as usual) at the beginning of the year.

Today, it was announced via social media that both Bears running backs D’Andre Swift (hip/knee) and Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) missed practice. If they have to go into Lambeau Field without one of them, so be it, but both? It would be a challenge offensively, as they’re already without their star QB Caleb Williams.

Even with that coming out, head coach Ben Johnson spoke to the media today regarding Monangai’s thumb.

“Not an issue” could still very well be an issue. Finger injuries linger for playmakers, with the thumb being no exception.

D’Andre Swift was benched during the Jets win, and many thought it could’ve been due to injury. Johnson put that rumor to rest rather quickly, stating it was about the fumbles.

“The one last week was egregious; we can’t have that… but he (Swift) will be just fine.”

Could the Chicago Bears be without both D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai against the Packers?

If both D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai were to miss this week’s game, most everyone would be surprised. It’s only Wednesday, and so many players miss practice for one reason or the other, so it’s not time to sound the alarm just yet.

With the intensity of this matchup being very high, I could see both playing. This is a massive game in regard to the NFC North.

Behind the two backs at third string would be Roschon Johnson, who never took that leap that some expected he would in the NFL. He’d likely take a bulk of the snaps. Johnson was the backup to Bijan Robinson at Texas, who’s having a monster season thus far.

Even if Swift is good to go, his certainty as the starting running back is no longer 100%. His turnovers have cost the Bears some points this year, and maybe even a win in Week 2, when he fumbled at the goal line.

“We all have to have short memories,” coach Ben Johnson said Monday. “We’ve got to learn from it, and coaches, players, all of us, we’re going to do some things that we don’t like at times. Could be a bad play call on my end, could be a missed tackle by our defense. All of those things happen. Learn from it and move on.”
