Chicago Bears throw Caleb Williams playing curveball right before Packers game
With the news coming on Friday that Chicago Bears legend Mike Ditka died at 86, all bets might be off the table when it comes to the team’s preparation against their staunchest rival, the Green Bay Packers, for Sunday’s contest at Lambeau Field.
Earlier in the week, Bears head coach Ben Johnson revealed he planned to start backup quarterback Tyson Bagent as Caleb Williams recovers from a Grade 2 hamstring strain. Williams did not participate in the first two days of practice this week but had been throwing the ball and running some, per multiple reports.
On Friday, Williams’ status changed.
Per the final injury report on Friday, Williams was a limited participant in practice and is marked as questionable to play against the Packers. In addition to Williams, Kyler Gordon (calf), Shemar Turner (knee), and Noah Sewell (Achilles) are questionable to play.
Chicago Bears could play Caleb Williams against Packers

Keyshaun Elliott (quad) and Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) were ruled out.
On Friday, Johnson told reporters the Bears had a plan for Williams and were going “step by step” with the plan.
“We got him progressively increasing the amount of running that’s going on, and of course the throwing aspect of it is a big part of his position as well,” Johnson said, via USA Today. “Our guys have a good plan in place and we’re just going step by step with that right now.”
If Williams is able to play, it’s unclear if he’d serve as a backup to Bagent or would get the opportunity to start against the Packers. Given the news of Ditka’s death, Sunday’s game has become even more meaningful for the Bears than it otherwise would have been against their heated rival.
Williams went 21 of 29 passing for 269 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 59-37 win over the Panthers in Week 1. He struggled in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, throwing for 138 yards and one interception before suffering the injury.
Williams made key throws at the end of the Bears-Packers contests in the regular season and Divisional Round that allowed Chicago to earn miracle wins. Maybe a miracle start is in line for Williams on Sunday.
