Fever star Sophie Cunningham addresses Angel Reese’s behavior in WNBA Finals
Angel Reese faced backlash from fans for her behavior in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. The Atlanta Dream star forward appeared to give up on a play when her teammates failed to pass the ball to her. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham addressed it on her podcast on Friday.
Reese and the Dream pulled off the road victory and stole homecourt advantage. They also won Game 3 and took a 2-1 series lead. However, the Golden State Valkyries emerged victorious in Game 4 on Saturday, winning 67-62 at State Farm Arena. They have homecourt advantage again as two of the last three matchups will be played at Chase Center.
Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Aces eliminated the Fever on Oct. 1. Cunningham and Co. pushed the first-round series to a winner-take-all Game 3 but failed to dethrone the defending champions. The veteran guard will become an unrestricted free agent by the end of the season, and her future with Indiana is up in the air.
Fever guard Sophie Cunningham chimes in on Angel Reese’s behavior in Game 2
Cunningham stressed that several WNBA players could have been caught on camera expressing frustration when not receiving the ball. She added that Reese’s actions changed the series as she showed everyone that she wants the ball in her hands and lead her team to victory.
“This is where I thought the series changed,” Cunningham said. “Social media was lighting her up and saying she was a baby and she was all this. I understand for like high school players out there that are watching this. You don’t want to have bad body language. You don’t want to show up your teammates on the court (and) you want to make sure that you’re a team player, etcetera. But at some point, you got to say, I’m the best player. I need the ball. And then you have to respond accordingly. One, you could probably clip almost everybody in the WNBA, in the NBA that has clips like this.
“The frustration clips, right? You can 100 % do that. That’s what you get when you’re playing at a high level, when you’re a competitor, especially when you’re trying to get a championship, like this sh*t’s going to happen. I’m not surprised by that. Number two, do I like the body language? Do I think that it could have been better? Absolutely. I think if she watches this back, I think she could have said the same thing. But three, sometimes you got to do it.”

Reese recorded eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks in Game 4. It was a subpar performance compared to her production in the first three games. The good news is Atlanta has proven that it can win on the road and has a chance to do so again on Monday.
