White Sox’s 2026 ALDS loss exposed one key area for improvement

Chicago White Sox, White Sox News

The Chicago White Sox’s magical 2026 season has officially come to an end after a 2-0 loss to the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the ALDS. Following a 2-0 sweep of the Houston Astros in the ALWCS, Will Venable’s squad appeared poised to reach the ALCS after winning the first two games of the series on the road.

However, the White Sox failed to close out the series at home before falling in the decisive Game 5, marking just the fourth time in MLB postseason history that a team has blown a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five series. To make matters worse, Chicago’s offense struck out a record amount of times over those five games, 75 times to be exact, the most ever in MLB’s modern era in either the regular season or postseason.

Chicago White Sox must reduce the number of times they strikeout

The White Sox’s 2026 campaign will largely be remembered for their potent offense, highlighted by three players hitting at least 30 home runs and a fifth-place ranking in the league in that category. Their power at the plate helped fuel the fifth-highest scoring offense in the regular season, while their patient approach also led to the fourth-most walks in the league.

However, the White Sox offense struggled to replicate that production in the postseason, recording just four home runs across seven games while posting a .316 team on-base percentage. Strikeouts proved to be an even bigger issue, as Chicago batters went down on strikes 96 times.

The team also made postseason history in the process, striking out 21 times in Game 5 of the ALDS and 19 times in Game 3, setting records for the most strikeouts in a nine-inning postseason game. Munetaka Murakami had a team worst 16 strikeouts, with Kyle Teel’s 14, Braden Montgomery’s 12, and Colson Montgomery’s 11 right behind him.

It goes without saying that reducing strikeouts must be a priority for White Sox hitters this offseason. That doesn’t mean abandoning their power-hitting approach, but finding a better balance between swinging for the fences and consistently putting the ball in play. Making more contact can put additional pressure on opposing defenses, create more scoring opportunities, and lead to better results on the field rather than walking back to the dugout empty-handed.
