$100B Louisiana Oil Industry Flooding Sets Fossil Fuel Profiteers Crazy

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

By Deborah Dupré

Today, as southern Louisiana is in a state of emergency due to the second deadly “1000-Year Louisiana Flood” this year, still claiming lives, the state’s Big Oil profiteers are wringing their hands, not due to the 13 deaths nor some 40,000 residents’ homelessness. Fossil fuel profits are in jeopardy, Big Profits. The $100 billion energy infrastructure of oil-cursed Louisiana is threatened by combined rising sea levels and erosion. Fossil fuel facilities intended to remain above ground are going under, reports Bloomberg on Thursday, maintaining the oil mafia’s code of silence about justifiably suspected refinery leaks this week.

Emotional ‘Louisiana Flood Adopt a Family’ Soars

Under this week’s Louisiana Flood articles harsh, comments have been slung regarding people “choosing to live” in flood-prone areas. Bloomberg notes, however, that even oil and gas-related facilities built by the most highly skilled and highly paid technicians and engineers, however, face the same ever-increasing environmental crisis, according to Bloomberg.

Louisiana’s coastline is rapidly receding, as coastlines are globally — whether drilled and “developed” or not.

Pacific Wave Sweeps Away West Coasters, Carves New Coastline

In South Louisiana, however, as sea level rises and erosion continues, endless miles of tangles of pipeline are exposed to corrosive seawater and refineries, tank farms and ports are at risk. That means, as this author highlighted again this week, that in turn, residents throughout South Louisiana also are at risk.

“Refinery accidents often happen during severe weather; flood waters causing the most damage, overflowing treatment tanks, sending oil and its toxic chemicals into nearby canals and neighborhoods. The worst, most deadly damage from Hurricane Katrina was from flooded oil refineries. Media has kept a tight lid on refinery incidents throughout this event to date.

“The petrochemical industry continues to  lack transparency and accountability regarding emergency preparedness in a region tested time and again by catastrophic events,” reports Anna Hrybyk, Louisiana Bucket Brigade program manager in a commentary on the present Louisiana flood.

Mother Nature Turns Back on Louisiana Big Oil

Fossil fuel energy consultant and former director of Port Fourchon and others say that nature is no longer protecting the vast maze of refineries, pipelines and fossil fuel-related support facilities.

Louisiana has had an expensive plan to “protect both its backbone industry and its citizens” from the dangerous flooding threat. It also has, however, a $2 billion deficit looming next year.  The oil-rich, oil-cursed, cash-poor state lacks funds to adequately address global warming’s sea level rising crisis. This means Big Oil is facing new pressures to bankroll critical environmental projects — by choice or by force.

“The industry down there has relied on the natural environment to protect its infrastructure, and that environment is now unraveling,” said Kai Midboe, the director of policy research at the Water Institute of the Gulf. “They need to step up.”

Every year in Louisiana, over 20 square miles of land is swallowed by rising waters of the Gulf of Mexico and erosion.

“The oil and gas sector is already losing an average of $14 billion a year to environmental threats to its infrastructure, according to a study by America’s Wetlands Foundation and Entergy Corp. By 2030, those losses could exceed $350 billion.” (Bloomberg)

“The problems are real. We need to deal with them now,” Midboe told executives. “The public funding needed to protect this infrastructure is going to fall far short.”

In the catastrophic flood from heavy rainfall and water overrunning levees along several tributaries this week, Exxon Mobil Corp. shut units at its Baton Rouge refinery, the fourth-largest in the U.S. Activists began gathering in New Orleans this week to demand the oil giant remain shut. Exxon finally admitted (after email evidence surfaced)  that it not only knew as far back as 1981 that burning fossil fuels increases global warming due to the buildup of greenhouse gases. It also admitted continuing to pay non-scientific operations to create and repeat propaganda to convince the naive public that there is no scientific evidence for a link between fossil fuel use and global warming.

The oil giant took out full-page advertorials in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal with titles such as “Climate Change: A Degree of Uncertainty” and “With Climate Change, What We Don’t Know Can Hurt Us.” (Rolling Stones)

Above: Bill McKibben of 350.0rg on Why Exxon Is the Next Big Climate Fight:

“They helped waste what may turn out to be the most critical quarter century in human history,” McKibben stated of Exxon’s alleged climate lies.

In November, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman opened a fraud investigation. He subpoenaed the company for 39 years’ worth of internal memos, e-mails and other documents related to climate change. The FBI is circling the 70,000-person company. Its alleged fraud has influenced mainly right-wingers to become staunch anthropogenic climate change deniers.

People from across the Gulf region are preparing to protest an upcoming auction of huge chunks of the Gulf of Mexico for oil drilling. The auction will be held at the infamous Superdome, where Hurricane Katrina human rights abuses and violence have crossed the minds of many Louisiana surivors of today’s flodding catastrophe.

A march on August 20th, called “Gulf Coast Interdependence Day,” organized by over  20 local and national groups united under the vision that Another Gulf is Possible, calls for the Obama Administration to halt to the auction and all new drilling projects in the Gulf South.

On the 21st, organizers will hold a “Just Transition Solidarity Summit,” aiming to “deepen and ground the personal, interpersonal, and systemic dynamics of oppression, solidarity, privilege and power,” and endeavor to imagine a fair and equitable transformation out of a fossil fuel-driven economy. On the 24th, the day of the slated auction, an action directed at the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is slated to hold the agency accountable for trying to lease over 20 million acres of the embattled Gulf of Mexico. (Greenpeace)

Even “Exxon investors are worried about how global efforts to curtail rising temperatures will hurt the company’s profits”, Bloomberg says.

This week, approximately 40,000 families have become displaced in southeastern Louisiana. That’s another 80,000 plus American environmental refugees. The death toll stands today at 13. An untold number of flood swamped homes have not been checked and officials say it will take another two weeks for search and rescue workers to reach them.. Officials also say they believe that the total dead toll will be fewer than Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath caused.

Louisiana Flood Death Toll ‘Unknown,’ ‘Probably Fewer Than Hurricane Katrina’

“Unquestionably, oil and gas activity has impacts,” said energy consultant Falgout, who owns large swaths of marshland affected by erosion and subsidence. “But oil and gas did what government let it do, like everyone else.”

Chris Dalbomb of the Tulane University Water Institute says: “I don’t think any of us can say we are not responsible to some extent.”

The truth is once again coming out. I’ve seen those open treatment ponds and pipelines. They are totally vulnerable. I’ve seen some of the spills. South Louisiana is a sacrifice zone.

Mums the word across the board in MSM regarding Louisiana flood oil leaks during the Louisiana Flood.
This is what fascism looks like.

      • MAC JAM

I’m telling you Exon Mobile, HELL “ALL” the big OIL CO’s are playing brer rabbit and the briar patch where global warming is concerned, they want a global carbon tax, they are the Elite, they are The Powers That Be, they want ALL the GLOBALIST trade agreements that dilute American sovereignty, They want a tyrannical fascist corporate run Global government.. I can appreciate your desire to do good with your misplaced activism but you are being used by the very people you think you are hurting.. Just take a look at the BP oil spill even your Obama turned a blind eye to that tragedy, Hell the damage from that is still on going to this day and will continue for who knows how long, THEY ARE UNTOUCHABLE they own ALL your HERO’s and worse than that all they gotta do is let you think you’re GETTING them with all this global warming stuff and they will again get exactly what they want A WORLD WIDE TAX ON LIFE ITS-SELF!!! A Global Carbon Tax!!..
Carbon Dioxide is only .038% of our atmosphere, The deep seas are not warming baffling Global Warming Gurus, only the shallows proving there is no significant warming, other planets are in a warming cycle, proving that any warming is extra terrestrial in nature, we are having anomalous weather mostly by design through a very intense and dangerous Geo engineering program..
Yeah global warming is a VAST conspiracy put on us by the most powerful and richest creatures on Earth, the same creatures who fund ALL the sciences the same creatures that own ALL the Media ALL the Politicians and even All the Eco Groups I know its hard to believe but its still a real conspiracy just the same.. Didn’t they teach you about the carbon cycle in the 2nd grade?

Isn’t it amazing how climate-denying trolls change arguments depending on the circumstances? This one is all about conspiracies, flying in the face of all the scientific evidence. Not to worry, Americans are finally starting to catch on to what the rest of the world (except Australia, which is touch and go) already knows: global warming is here and is man-made. Most Americans now understand, and more will as they see the effects of warming all around them.

See previous stories in this series to learn how the trolls operate and to read my comments upholding the truth. You will see all of the silly claims here refuted, and you will see links to Web sites where real climate scientists talk about real climate science. There are also links to scientific sites where the deniers’ claims are refuted. Hang in there, the real science is far more interesting than the denials.

Interestingly, this particular conspiracy enthusiast does identify some real culprits, along with the real heroes. Whatever.

            Platitudes, rhetoric and distortion.

Nothing much to bother with here.

Leave the confines of whatever leftist enclave you abide in doc, and take a few polls out in the real world. The results you acquire will not be anything you care to share with anyone. This country grows more cognizant of leftist lies every day. The only beaches receding into the waves are on coastlines in leftist fairy-land.

How do you account for this being the 8th time In 1 Year that a “500-Year (!) rainfall event hit the US?
Does this concern you at all?
Or is it just satisfying you to continue repeating the carbon tax fear-mongering the left loves to push as its rationale for doing nothing to stop global warming extinction and claiming it’s all a hoax – contrary to almost every genuine independent scientists and their research?

          • LifeIs

That’s how statistics work. See the hero of Global Warming on the subject, below.

And didn’t I see in another of your articles that carbon dioxide is making a drought in California?

Nothing like the ones a thousand years ago or so, but still a drought?

And if there were a drought in Louisiana, you’d be blaming carbon dioxide for that, wouldn’t you?

You and your snarky little henchman call me a Troll for having a different opinion than you, a different take on the available information, You seem genuinely concerned for the future of humanity, Well let me tell ya SO AM I!!
Ever wonder why The French Foreign Minister said ‘We Have 500 Days to Avoid Climate Chaos’? Well I have, It occurred to me that maybe they know something that we don’t, Ever wonder why it seems like the people that we hire to run things have let everything go to HELL?, The infrastructure, the economy, race relations, pollution run amuck, Childhood cancer off the charts, autism off the charts, adult cancers off the charts, Alzheimer’s off the charts, Degenerative diseases off the charts, mind twisting drugs both elicit and prescription, hell the old street drugs seem way safer than the prescription drugs, etc etc.. Doesn’t it seem like the World has gone insane? We have nothing but controversy, mass hysteria and controversy over everything from sexual identity, to salting every major population area in the civilized World with uncivilized backwards primitive and sometimes violent and diseased Muslim refuges, to Obama as a Manchurian candidate enemy of the USA illegal alien, Hillary as a serial murderer-serial felon-serial-liar, Trump as a Richie rich cartoon character of a human being, Both Hillary and the Don running for whats supposed to be the highest office on earth, wars and rumors of wars, etc etc etc Weather anomalies extraordinaire, earth quakes, volcanic activity off the charts, fukushima leaking radiation into ocean with no end in sight all the tanks that they are supposed to be storing all the radioactive water in are leaking like crazy, The pacific ocean dying, the north Atlantic dying, The gulf stream dying, A full 94% of ALL nuclear reactors in the world are leaking like crazy and no-one in charge seems very concerned, There’s more a lot more ever wonder about any of this? Well I do and I think something is going down something big and all this is more than just neglect or incompetence, as Rahm Emanuel said never let a good crisis go to waste, I think its all being used as a distraction, but the distractions aren’t over yet, I think we are in for a huge and planned financial collapse then or simultaneously a mini staged bloody and vicious World war maybe even with a small nuclear exchange and all through this a climate catastrophe will be unfolding that we will blame ALL the Chaos all the calamities on, and we will blame that climate catastrophe on “carbon dioxide” while in reality we will be going through a know cyclical occurrences, a pretty big deal, one that is going to cause a global catastrophe, It will change everything, a LOT of people are going to die but there will be survivors and those people will remember that it was all “carbon dioxides” fault, enough people to start a “New World Order” one with NO nation States NO borders a one World totalitarian Global government will be established with two maybe even three distinct species of human beings, The Elite Class the liaison Class and the worker class, of course we will still have something resembling a monetary system although I don’t think there will be CASH we will be chipped and through those chips they will charge you your CARBON TAXES!! That is how they will fund this Brave New World ..They will control every aspect of your miserable life from your miserable birth to your miserable death.. I know this sounds fantastic and believe it or not this is just the readers digest version, there’s more a lot more but in a nut shell its how I see things unfolding..
Yeah I know I am a Nut case, But we shall see..

      1. Sea level rising in Louisiana is the land sinking. The coastline HERE in Florida is not going anywhere. Well, the beaches have suffered from loss of the dunes. And sand is lost from beaches in storms, replenished by gentle wave action in time.

Just as Louisiana suffers coastal erosion from human activities that deplete sediment in rivers, which would replenish the land in time.

      2. For your “thousand year flood” misunderstanding, here’s the hero of Global Warming on the subject.

“One might believe that a 1,000-year flood actually occurs once every 1,000 years. It doesn’t, necessarily.

“It could happen twice in 10 years,” said Michael Mann, a professor of meteorology at Penn State University. “And, then it might not happen for another 10,000 years.”

The reference is to a statistical measure — 1 in 1,000. It means that there is a 1 in 1,000, or 0.1 percent, chance that such a rain event or flood will occur in any given year.”

      http://www.cnbc.com/2015/10/05/1000-year-flood-hyperbole-or-hard-science.html

      3. Toxic chemical spills are entirely man-made problems.

      4. Paul Brown the only things you know about the subject are the things I’ve told you. Your own posts are fact-free.

    • Paul Brown

      Readers:

It should be clear now how climate denier trolls operate. I have presented plenty of facts in comments to previous articles, which are countered by their misrepresentations. Just so you know, here are some of their misrepresentations in these comments.

MAC JAM is right on with regard to the powers that be in our country and globally, with one exception: climate change is a real and present disaster. The last 15 months have broken all previous records since records have been kept and the planet is on the verge of exceeding 1.5C increase: http://www.climatecentral.org/news/july-makes-15-record-hot-months-in-a-row-20611. The current level of CO2 is roughly 40% higher than before the industrial revolution, and most of the new carbon is millions of year old, meaning it comes from fossil fuels. It is sufficient to account for part of the current warming, and the resulting increase in atmospheric water vapor (warmer air holds more water) is enough to account for most of the rest of the temperature rise. There is nothing odd about deep seas warming slower than surface waters: the heat is coming from above, not below, and hot water stays on top. The amount of extra heat retained by our planet is well accounted for by temperature increases of air, land and water. Of the other 8 planets, only Mars and Pluto are warming, and the Sun’s heat output is not increasing. And the carbon cycle certainly doesn’t disprove global warming.

Lifels continues to mislead. Of course multiple 1000- or 500-year events can occur at shorter intervals, but the odds of several such events in short intervals are very, very low. Two 1000-year events in the same year have a likelihood of 1 in 1 million. In any case, their occurrence is just a symptom of a well-established fact: Global warming is making such events more probable, and flood zones are being remapped because places are flooding in areas not previously considered flood zones. As for his comment that toxic chemical spills are totally man-made, he’s absolutely right. So is the current global warming. Of course global warming is causing a record drought in California (and increased floods due to more violent rain storms) and floods in other parts of the country far worse and more often than previously. It is also causing more violent winter storms. Deniers love to make this look inconsistent but it’s not. Anyone interested in the science behind these effects can read the explanation here: https://www.whoi.edu/cms/files/Storms_49n3_143484.pdf.

The antics of climate deniers would be amusing if the situation weren’t so dire. They already have blood on their hands. The United States has over 100,000 climate refugees right now, from wildfires and flooding. It is going to get worse before it gets better because the existing CO2 in the atmosphere will stay there around 100 years and we are continuing to increase it and methane, which is even worse. Feedbacks due to melting ice and tundra, ocean acidification, and decreasing CO2 removal by plants are worse than scientists anticipated.

Here’s the point that climate change deniers always evade: The current theory of anthropogenic warming (they hate that phrase) accounts for the observed warming, the climate effects, and the positive feedbacks. None of the glib objections of the climate deniers (most of which are false, and the rest irrelevant) constitute a disproof of the theory. And although the climate deniers have suggested other causes of warming (when they admit it’s happening) such as increased solar heat output, cosmic rays, and Earth’s orbit, none of them account for observed facts. In other words, they do not have an alternative theory.

      • LifeIs

No, you don’t multiply .001 by .001 for this.

It is not a conditional probability.

This is the formula you want: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100-year_flood and scroll down to “Probability.”

Then scroll down to “Observed Intervals Between Floods” to see examples of how the formula works.

(I’ve been so busy tonight, I hope you appreciate the help.)

What I’ve given you elsewhere is proof that there is no greenhouse effect. The atmosphere of Venus, almost pure C02 and very cool where pressure is equal to our sea level, proves it. The use of satellites to measure our air temperatures proves that we radiate heat directly into space anyway. The radiant heat of oxygen and argon are not absorbed by water vapor or C02.

I could explain why there is no greenhouse effect. We’ve known since R.W. Wood in 1909 that greenhouses work by blocking convection of the air. And convection occurs in our air. Try keeping warm some cold winter night by back-radiation instead of a blanket.

We know that heat flows from warm substances to colder ones. Even if you keep adding heat to the warm substance, it flows one way. The cold atmosphere cannot heat the Earth or the air at the surface.

That makes all your political rhetoric and your alarmism irrelevant. You are someone who does not know what he is saying. You thought a trace gas (380 ppm) changed our temperature by 33 degrees C. Nobody says that. You thought the binomial distribution Michael Mann spoke of was a conditional probability.

You are not equipped to discuss this matter.

        • LifeIs

I was too distracted to make it clear: Paul, your “one chance in a million” statistic is not correct. We are not talking about a conditional probability, like drawing cards or rolling dice. We are talking about a binomial distribution.

          • Paul Brown

            Readers:

This my last comment on this article, for your benefit, not for the climate deniers who will never give up.

Lifels’s arguments about probability are wrong, of course. His sleight of hand about conditional probabilities and binomial distributions is gobbledegook. If two events, like heads or tails in two coin flips, are independent, the probability of an outcome occurring twice is e. Heads or tails each have a probability of 0.5. A particular combination of two coin flips such as two heads is 0.5v x 0.5 = 0.25, as one sees from the fact that there are four equally probably results: HH, HT, TH, TT. If, as Lifels and other climate deniers claim, two thousand-year events don’t have a common cause or influence the probabilities of each other, they are independent events and the probability of two occurring in the same year is 1/1000 x 1/1000 = 1/1,000,000.
Yet another example of Lifels’s deliberate misdirection.
            Bye-bye until the next article.

            • Paul Brown

Oops, wrong keystroke interrupted editing. Should read:
…If two events, like heads in two coin flips, are independent (the occurrence of one doesn’t influence the likelihood of the occurrence of the other), the probability of the combination is equal to the product of their individual occurrences. A particular combination of two coin flips such as two heads is 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25, as one sees from the fact that there are four equally probably results: HH (heads, heads), HT, TH, TT…

          • LifeIs

Conditional probability is where you multiply like you did.

Good Lord, I gave you a link to an explanation and a formula for the math you are not understanding, the flood intervals math.

This is the formula you want: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100-year_flood and scroll down to “Probability.”

Then scroll down to “Observed Intervals Between Floods” to see examples of how the formula works.

Here are the terms, Paul, or just go to the formula and the on point explanation.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_distribution

            http://www.stat.yale.edu/Courses/1997-98/101/condprob.htm

Yeah, if I were incapable of understanding what I was talking about, I would stop, and a lot earlier than you did, Paul.

            • Paul Brown

Good, Lifels. Except the formula on Wikipedia is for ONE OR MORE EVENTS IN THE SAME PERIOD, not for two events in the same period. Using the formula, the probability is the same as the probability of one event, namely 1/1000.
My formula is not the one for conditional probability. Conditional probability for a second flood given the occurrence of a first is the same as for the first flood unless the first changes the probability of the second, namely 1/1000. They probably are not independent, since the causes of the first and second flood are likely related, but no one knows the actual statistics needed to use the formula yet. And things are changing so fast that it would be virtually impossible to gather such statistics for a given location.
The probability of two independent occurrences of two thousand-year floods in one year is still 1/million: http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol6/independent_events.htm.
Lifels’s attempt at distraction is another characteristic ploy of global warming deniers.

            • LifeIs

Paul, you’re using terms wrong, now. “Independent” and “dependent.”

They do not refer to the causes of storms / floods / events.

Dependent would be like, you draw a card, and don’t put it back in the deck. You’ve affected the probability of the next draw.

You have to account for that in calculations.

What you cannot do is take a figure derived from the the expected value–

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expected_value

–by means of the Rule of Subtraction–

              http://stattrek.com/probability/probability-rules.aspx

–and then multiply as if you were talking about the intersection of two events.

The .001 figure is not an OUTCOME, Paul. You’re not drawing cards and getting and OUTCOME each time.

You can’t do anything with the .001 figure, except use the binomial distribution formula at the link I gave you.

So, where is the counter point?

We who live in the Sierra’s, are seeing an Ultra Violet Index of 10-11, same as the top of Mt Whitney, a point or so.

      Weaponized weather.

So, what are we going to do to stop this?

In the Sierra’s, the snowpack & rainfall, become part of the L.A. Aquaduct, which is the water, both for our food & S. California.

Does the U.N. have a signed document, to evacuate California, under drought, & steal our land?
