Alex Bregman giving Cubs fans a far too familiar feeling

It’s been a rough go for Alex Bregman in Chicago so far. While only a few months into his five-year tenure with the Cubs, he and fans alike are frustrated with the lack of production. He’s hit for little power and has not come up in key situations. The boos at Wrigley Field are starting to be heard.

This horrific 7-21 stretch magnifies Bregman’s lack of production, and his struggles have been a big contributor to this spiral. Fans are getting some uneasy feelings.

Cubs fans remember times like these for other key players

Bregman was brought in to be the “Alpha” of the team. Even if the likes of Michael Busch or Seiya Suzuki put up better numbers, Bregman needs to be the driving force. Like when Kris Bryant was the MVP in 2016, he was the best producer and talent, but Anthony Rizzo was the cornerstone.

The lack of production, the jeers, and the scratching of heads, it can remind one of post-June Kyle Tucker last year. He was brought in to be “the guy” last year, and for a while he was, before the finger injury after which it all fell apart. When Tucker struggled, the rest of the team did too. While the circumstances between Bregman and Tucker are not all apples-to-apples, similar dejected and frustrated feelings are present.

Other comparisons are floating around out there. Obviously with the money, one can connect Bregman to the Jason Heyward deal. Though Heyward was not signed to be the primary catalyst. Somewhat similar to Dansby Swanson, though Heyward had a higher offensive ceiling. Another, to a lesser extent, was 2024 Cody Bellinger. He put up okay numbers in a vacuum, but not quite to expectations.

The jury on Bregman has not concluded

There is no sugarcoating how awful it’s been for Bregman, but it is a small sample size. He’s working his tail off to try to fix things.

Fears are real about Bregman’s hitting profile not fitting the best at Wrigley, and being on the wrong side of 30, and coming off a season where an injury derailed what was looking like an MVP caliber season in Boston. With that said, it does not mean this is the best we will get from him going forward. Sometimes, the right tweaks, physically and mentally, can bust downward trends.

There is still bullishness on Bregman turning it around from people in baseball. Hopefully for his and the Cubs’ sake, that happens. He’s a very good talent with a professional approach at the plate, but the production simply has to come. Time will tell if that’s reality or if things are indeed on the downswing for the veteran infielder.
