Caitlin Clark addresses Stephanie White moment: ‘I could’ve hurt her’

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) talks to Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White were involved in a heated moment in the Indiana Fever’s blowout loss to the Portland Fire on Saturday. The pair passionately exchanged words on the bench during a timeout. Unsurprisingly, it drew a lot of attention from the media and fans alike.

Clark and White had another eye-catching moment in Thursday’s matchup against the Atlanta Dream. It was another fiery exchange from the two. The main difference is that this time around, both were hyped after Clark led a big Fever run in the third quarter.

As the two-time All-Star made her way to the bench, she chest-bumped White, who happily accepted the gesture.

Clark joked about the moment during her postgame interview. When asked whether she felt the need to protect her 48-year-old coach during bursts of emotion in games, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year took the opportunity to troll White.

“She’s had a lot of surgery, so I could’ve hurt her, honestly,” Clark said.

On a more serious note, the Fever superstar added that she admires White’s fervor.

“I mean, she’s fiery and competitive,” she continued. “She shows passion, too, and she hypes her players up. We were both just hyped.

“… But that stuff happens, and I wouldn’t want to play for any other coach that’s just stoic. I love that. That got me hyped.”

It wasn’t just Clark and White who used their emotions to fuel the win on Thursday night. The entire team played with a burning desire to secure the victory in front of a packed house in Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

“I thought that was the story of the night,” Clark continued. “Just the energy and the emotion, and it felt like we were playing for the person to our left and to our right.

“Some games are gonna stink, and you’re not always gonna have it, but you can still always do that. And I felt like we could have even played better and shot better, but it was because we were connected and playing for each other that we found a lot of success.”

The Fever improved to 5-4 after beating Angel Reese and the Dream. It was their first game of the Commissioner’s Cup, too, and they’ve now started their title defense with a crucial victory.
