The Chicago Fire were set for Robert Lewandowski’s debut on Thursday before their match vs. Vancouver was postponed. The idea of Lewandowski joining the team made big news during the World Cup, and eventually it came true just a week ago. But now, the Fire are moving forward without their leading scorer.
On Sunday, just days after their return from the international break was postponed, news broke that the Fire and CF Monterrey had agreed to a transfer deal for Hugo Cuypers. It’s a bit of a surprising move as Cuypers currently leads MLS in goals with 13.

The news for the sale of the 29-year-old Cuypers was reported by Tom Bogert of The Athletic and later confirmed by MenInRed97:
Chicago Fire have sources have confirmed to MenInRed97 that striker Hugo Cuypers is being sold to CF Monterey. The move comes in the wake of the arrival of Robert Lewandowski to the Fire and sends the current MLS Golden Boot leader (13 goals) to the Liga MX giants.
The transfer opens up a Designated Player (DP) and international slot for the Chicago Fire, helping to ease an acute crunch in the Fire’s roster. It also clears the way for the team to make another major signing this summer, with rumors of the Fire’s pursuit of German international midfielder Leon Goretzka continuing to swirl.
The two clubs agreed on a fee of $7.5 million with an additional $500,000 in add ons. For the Fire, it’s a risky move. The team is right there in the playoff race and a few points out of second place. The addition of Lewandowski was supposed to be a bonus to help get the Fire over the hump. But now with Cuypers gone, it feels like a big risk to take.
Chicago could be lining up for another move possibly, freeing up an other international spot.
