Jets Training Camp Report 8/7: Garrett Wilson Sets the Standard

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Garrett Wilson Garrett Wilson Garrett Wilson

Jets Training Camp continued on August 7 with a shorter practice in scorching heat at the team facility in Florham Park. JetNation’s Kenny Delgado, who posts in our forums as @kdels62, was back on the field to take in the action.  Garrett Wilson was the biggest takeaway from the day. The Jets star receiver continued to make difficult plays look routine, catching everything thrown his way. Kenny also took a close look at the work being done by special teams coordinator Chris Banjo and several players competing for larger roles.

Check out Kenny’s Jets Training Camp observations for his live updates from the practice field.

General Notes

Press went out to Field 1 at 8:30. Players were on the field in shells.

They told us ahead of time that the practice would be shorter.

It was scorching hot but definitely less humid than the day before. The sun was way worse though and was giving off the kind of brightness that made everything look the wrong color.

Veteran rest day for Minkah and Davis. I also didn’t note Stephens out there today.

A lot of 3rd-and-long work during team periods.

More of the walk-through personnel change periods, hopefully it translates to procedural excellence.

Tomorrow the practice is open to fans and a media guy said it would be a full practice. I’m sure that’s subject to change.

Overview – Jets Training Camp

Even though I only observed two training camp practices, one was not even a full practice, I think there’s something to be said for consistency. Does it flow? Is the easy part easy and does that then create a platform to do more in a better way?

Without a doubt the most consistent aspect of everything on the field for the Jets is Garrett Wilson. He barely came up in my write-up yesterday and it’s because he is so mundane in his excellence. He steps on the field, makes a catch, celebrates and moves on. It is a type of greatness that is understated because it is the standard. Today, in 90-degree weather, Garrett just caught everything. He lined up, beat whoever was in front of him, and moved to the next play. He’d move across the formation doing the things that he makes look easy while others try hard and fail. If the offense can succeed it will be because the others on the team find the consistency that is taken for granted when it comes from the player in a green number 5 jersey.

Last year, there was only one other certainty on the field every week, the special teams unit. After Week 1 it was a damn near perfect group that oversaw the elevation of Isaiah Williams, Arien Smith and Kene Nwangwu. That consistency came from the efforts of Chris Banjo and his coaching. Today, the coaching he provided was on full display. His booming voice asking for consistency. One rep of kick returns and Banjo shouted, “Technique. It has to be perfect every time.” Another rep, and again Banjo roared over a premium selection of early 2000s hip hop. “Technique equals execution!” Another rep and again Banjo gave direction, “I’m not gonna be able to help you on game day so you gotta get it right, now.” Another rep and the special teams coordinator was finally satisfied. “That’s it, that’s what we want.”

Good Day

Take this with a grain of salt since it wasn’t a full practice.

Darrell Jackson – Many, many reps. Many different alignments. The overlooked rookie will get his shot.

Azareyeh Thomas – Not perfect but his aggression and energy is obvious.

Starting Interior OL – Sometimes there was just a tremendous surge up the middle.

Tight Ends – They will be deployed. The personnel packages today were interesting and every tight end got targets.

Mykal Walker – If the theme is consistency then a guy with 2 picks in 2 days has to be acknowledged, right?

Not Great

Zappe – Might not be better than Cook.

Linebackers not named Mykal Walker – If tight ends were getting open then the implicated position group is the linebackers. They couldn’t fully thump so that might matter.

Nonstarting Interior OL – Again can’t take too much from this practice but a high snap and some bad blitz pickup says something.

Pre-snap penalties – 2 delay of game penalties and 1 false start during 3rd-down drills felt like deja vu.

Was the Klub Open?

Yes, actually. Holds the ball a bit much at times but he had some nice throws.
