Report: Chicago White Sox have premier 2027 plans for 2 top prospects
Currently, the Chicago White Sox are focused on finishing the 2026 season strong and punching their ticket into the playoffs. Eventually though, the franchise must begin thinking about their future.
One clear area of needed improvement is in their pitching department. Chicago enters Tuesday’s games ranked 13th in ERA with a collective 4.11. The White Sox’s pitching staff is ranked the worst amongst all playoff contenders by Stephen J. Nesbitt and Chad Jennings of the Athletic.
There are some highlights, such as Sean Burke and Davis Martin. But the White Sox may be forced to spend in free agency to field a more formidable rotation.
Chicago could also decide to look inside their organization for pitching help. The White Sox have their eye on two former top prospects making the leap.
Chicago White Sox eyeing rotation shake up
Both Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith are expected to be stretched out as starters in spring training, via Elijah Evans of FutureSox. White Sox director of player development Paul Janish thinks both pitchers can be true fixtures out of the rotation.
“I think they have the ability to start and will probably get that opportunity again,” Janish said. “Due to the timing of the year right now, it’s all hands on deck.”
“When they come back next year they’re going to build up in the offseason as starters as of now,” he continued. “But the exposure to the Major [Leagues] this year is so invaluable.”
Schultz has technically exhausted his prospect eligibility, but he ranked No.1 in the organization during the 2025 campaign, via MLB Pipeline. Smith currently checks in as Chicago’s fourth-best prospect and will soon exhaust his eligibility as well.
Both players shined at the Triple-A level as starters and were drafted with a spot in the rotation in mind. If Schultz and/or Smith shine during spring training, the White Sox’s youth revival will extend to their pitching staff.
