Chicago Cubs facing brutal 2027 outfield dilemma

The Chicago Cubs have already declared that they will be fixing their focus on pitching this offseason—and that’s entirely the right priority for Jed Hoyer and the front office.

The team could literally have no verifiably healthy and consistently effective starting pitchers as they head into the 2027 season. Zero.

Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes, and David Peterson will all likely become free agents. Cade Horton will miss most—if not all—of next season after having Tommy John surgery this past April. Justin Steele hasn’t pitched in nearly two full seasons due to his own elbow surgery and subsequent flexor strain. Ben Brown was shut down after a brilliant start to his 2026 season with the same recurring neck problem that ended his 2024 season. Edward Cabrera, meanwhile, was horrible in his injury-filled debut season in Chicago.

It’s a mess.

But the Cubs outfield is also a mess that can’t be ignored.

Starting corner outfielders Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki, as well as backup outfielders Michael Conforto and Tyrone Taylor will be eligible for free agency. The team is currently staring down a situation where Matt Shaw, Pedro Ramirez, and Kevin Alcantara—two infielders and an unproven prospect—could be competing for every day right field and left field duties, as the all-elite Pete Crow-Armstrong struggles to compensate in center for two weak points to either side of him. Obviously, that’s not ideal at all.

Yet, with all the looming outfield departures, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer saw fit to trade away two of the organization’s top outfield prospects this past year—Owen Caissie and Brett Bateman.

Caissie, who was sent over to the Miami Marlins in the Cabrera trade, struggled this season after a quick start, striking out over 37% of the time over the course of the season. Still, there’s upside there and he definitely would rank above Shaw or Ramirez in right.

Bateman was sent to the Toronto Blue Jays in the Kevin Gausman deal at the trade deadline. Unlike Caissie, though, he excelled upon his major league arrival, hitting .329 with a .402 on base percentage in 41 games as a prototypical leadoff hitter. Despite apparently being undervalued by the Cubs organization, everyone there might like to take back that Bateman trade and have the young talent vying for a corner outfield spot in 2027—especially after seeing how little they got from Gausman down the stretch.

A 2027 dilemma

At this point, it’ll probably be necessary for the Cubs to dip into the outfield free agent talent pool or make an uncomfortable trade if they can’t hold on to Happ and/or Suzuki. They’ve already been linked to deals for Steven Kwan of the Cleveland Guardians and Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox. Randall Grichuk has also been mentioned as a possible free agent target.

The Cubs do have a trio of top prospects in the minors working their way up the system—Josiah Hartshorn, Kane Kepley, and Ethan Conrad—but none are expected to be big league-bound in 2027.

Maybe the play will be to do what they can to hold on to Happ for one more season via qualifying offer as their prospects get at least one more season of development under their belts.

Whatever the case, Chicago will have to do something about this outfield situation.
