Chicago White Sox make a change behind the plate
After catcher Edgar Quero struggled to hold onto the starting catcher’s job this season, the Chicago White Sox are opting to make a change.
In a team announcement released on Monday morning, the White Sox have reinstated catcher Kyle Teel (right hamstring strain) from the 60-day injured list, while optioning Quero to Triple-A Charlotte. Teel had not appeared in a game for the White Sox all season after injuring his hamstring playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic.

During his rehab assignment in Charlotte, Teel tore the cover off the baseball, batting .387 with a 1.054 OPS, mashing two home runs and driving in six RBI in eight games. Teel was a favorite to be the White Sox’s starting catcher this season, after putting together a solid rookie campaign last season. Teel batted .273 with a .786 OPS, eight home runs, 11 doubles and 35 RBI.

Kyle Teel will likely be the Chicago White Sox’s starting catcher moving forward
Quero had every opportunity to take the starting catching job and run with it, but he failed. In 55 games, the 23-year-old batted .187 with a .486 OPS and two home runs, while striking out 41 times in 150 at-bats. Quero’s poor performance led manager Will Venable to platoon him with Drew Romo, who has also not performed, other than hitting for power. Romo batted .144 with five home runs in 90 at-bats.
Teel will likely be in the starting lineup for Venable on Monday when the White Sox open a three-game series with the Cleveland Guardians. Having Teel back for this series is huge for the White Sox (39-37), as they sit a game behind the Guardians (41-37) in the American League Central standings.
