Chicago Bears earn pair of explosive accolades after 3-1 start

Chicago Bears Ben Johnson

Through the first four weeks of the season, the Chicago Bears’ only loss came on a rainy game against the Minnesota Vikings in which quarterback Caleb Williams suffered an injury. Beyond just the 3-1 record, the Bears are proving they can be true playoff contenders.

For starters, Chicago is 2-0 with a backup quarterback under center in 2026. Furthermore, the franchise enters Week 5 ranked third in defense (282.3 yards per game) and first in offense (429 YPG).

Head coach Ben Johnson has gotten plenty of praise for the Bears’ rise. Which is why Mike Jones of the Athletic credited him for the best coaching job through the first quarter of the NFL season.

“The second-year coach entered the season boldly declaring that he wants to direct the most prolific offense the league has ever seen,” Jones wrote. “His Bears racked up 59 points in the opener, but then lost franchise quarterback Caleb Williams to a hamstring injury in Week 2.”

“Chicago has since rolled to consecutive blowout victories while using different backup quarterbacks,” Jones continued. “The backing of strong defensive and special teams units has many in league circles describing Chicago as one of the best through four weeks.”

Ultimately, Johnson cares more about winning a Super Bowl than any personal accolade. But if the Bears keep winning in the fashion they do, their leader will be in Coach of the Year talks.

Chicago Bears’ Case Keenum not forgotten

Chicago turned to Tyson Bagent as their starting quarterback in Week 4. He’ll be under center in Week 5 as well. But the NFL world hasn’t forgotten about Keenum’s heroics in Week 3. Which is why Jones argued Keenum had the best cameo performance of the first quarter.

“Despite not having played a game since 2023, the 38-year-old Keenum displayed no rust when he got the unexpected call to action with Caleb Williams and Tyler Bagent injured,” Jones wrote. “On Monday night of Week 3, Keenum lit up the Eagles for 247 passing yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a third to lead the Bears to an improbable 27-7 victory.”

Keenum helped wash away any thoughts of Chicago throwing in the towel after Williams’ injury. While he may be a backup again, the veteran proved he can get the job done when his name is called.

The Bears are proud to be 3-1, but know their season is far from over. If Chicago is able to reach their lofty expectations, there will be plenty of more accolades coming their way.
