Pirates Stuff:
- The Pirates promoted Justin Newman to their director of Amateur Scouting. He’s been with the Bucs since 2017 in various player research/analysis positions. Pittsburgh has been without an ASD since Justin Horowitz left to join the Nats in November of 2025; Newman will now lead the troops during the 2027 draft.

- Pittsburgh native Sudden Sam McDowell passed away at the age of 84; the Central Catholic grad pitched his last MLB season with the Bucs in 1975. Despite a fierce heater, six All-Star nods and league K leadership five times, he was bedeviled by alcohol. Sam cleaned up his act at Gateway Rehab after baseball and became an addiction specialist, helping others with his same problems back to the straight and narrow.
MLB Stuff:
- Contract Drill: MLB proposed that the season be cut from 162 games to 154 with teams playing four split-doubleheaders with Monday off-days (except for holidays & national TV) and ending the season a week earlier than now. The reduced schedule would kick in for 2029 along with MLB’s new national TV package. MLB wants to lengthen the division series from a best-of-five to a best-of-seven format (which could add eight games to the postseason) and allow the highest-seeded teams to choose their playoff opponent. Of course, these are all contingent on whether the elephant in the room, a salary cap, is dealt with or shuts down the sport.
Playoff Stuff:
- Movin’ on – Milwaukee meets the big bad boys from LA in the NLCS and Cleveland takes on Tampa Bay for the AL crown. Maybe there is hope for the small market guys… The Crew and LA started the show off Sunday night with Tarik Skubal facing Miz in Brewtown.
